Renowned filmmaker and media mogul Tyler Perry has inked a new multi-year, first-look agreement with Netflix, signaling his intention to write, direct, and produce feature films for the streaming giant.
This collaboration follows Perry’s partnership with Amazon Studios, announced in November 2022, where he committed to writing, directing, and producing four films for Prime Video. Perry has previously worked closely with Netflix, with upcoming projects such as “Six Triple Eight” and “Mea Culpa.”
“Six Triple Eight,” executive produced by Kerry Washington, is based on the inspiring true story of the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color stationed overseas during World War II. The film stars Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes.
“Mea Culpa” delves into the world of a criminal defense attorney who takes on the case of an artist accused of murdering his girlfriend. These films represent just a portion of Perry’s extensive work with Netflix.
Past Netflix collaborations include “A Jazzman’s Blues,” a recently honored recipient of the Humanitas Prize, which explores the theme of forbidden love. “A Madea Homecoming” marks the 12th installment in the highly successful Madea franchise, with Perry also taking on the titular role. Additionally, the thriller “A Fall from Grace” stars Crystal Fox.
Tyler Perry’s life story will soon grace the screen in “Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story,” a documentary directed by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz for Amazon Studios. The film has been selected as the centerpiece of AFI Fest, premiering at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on October 27.
